Magnetostrictive Level Measurement Probe

Automation Systems / Tank Level Probe

Description

Magnetostrictive Level Probe

Local Technology, High Precision and Industrial Reliability

The magnetostrictive level probes offered by General Petrol are high-precision level measurement solutions developed and manufactured with the engineering infrastructure and production capability of FIMTEK, specifically designed for fuel, LPG and industrial liquid storage applications.

As one of the partners of FIMTEK, General Petrol plays an active role not only in the commercial offering of these products, but also in their field-oriented development, project engineering, system integration and after-sales support. Thanks to this structure, the probe is delivered not merely as a sensor, but as a fully integrated tank measurement solution adapted to real operational conditions.

Magnetostrictive Measurement Technology

Magnetostrictive level probes measure liquid level using a time-based physical principle. An electromagnetic pulse is transmitted along a stainless-steel waveguide inside the probe. When this pulse interacts with the magnetic field of the float inside the tank, a torsional wave is generated and reflected back to the sensor head. By precisely measuring the travel time between the transmitted and returned signals, the absolute position of the liquid level is determined with millimetric accuracy.

This measurement principle ensures:

  • Continuous and absolute measurement

  • Drift-free operation over time

  • Minimal influence from temperature and environmental conditions

FIMTEK Engineering and Manufacturing Capability

Magnetostrictive level probes developed by FIMTEK are engineered through a fully integrated design approach covering mechanical construction, electronics, and firmware. The manufacturing process is based on:

  • AISI 316 stainless steel construction

  • High-precision electronic components

  • Full material traceability in accordance with EN 10204 3.1

Each probe is factory-calibrated and tested prior to shipment to ensure consistent and repeatable measurement performance.

The extensive field experience of General Petrol, combined with continuous project-based feedback, directly contributes to the development of products that are optimized for real-world operational environments.

Measurement Accuracy and Performance

Magnetostrictive probes provide:

  • Level accuracy of ±0.1 mm

  • Resolution of 0.01 mm

  • Dual-float configuration for simultaneous product and water level measurement

These capabilities are particularly critical for accurate inventory control, water detection in fuel tanks, and loss prevention applications.

An integrated temperature sensor allows real-time product temperature measurement, enabling temperature compensation and seamless data transmission to automation systems.

Robust Mechanical Design for Harsh Environments

The probe body is fully constructed from stainless steel, ensuring long-term resistance to:

  • Gasoline and diesel fuels

  • Biofuels

  • AdBlue (DEF)

  • Various industrial and chemical liquids

The hermetically sealed structure meets IP68 ingress protection, allowing safe operation in underground tanks and continuously submerged environments without performance degradation.

ATEX-Compliant and Safe for Hazardous Areas

FIMTEK magnetostrictive level probes are designed in compliance with ATEX and IECEx requirements. Explosion-proof and intrinsically safe (Ex i) versions are available for:

  • Zone 0

  • Zone 1

  • Zone 2

This makes them fully suitable for use in hazardous environments such as fuel stations, LPG storage systems, and chemical processing facilities. As a result, these probes have become a standard solution in many of General Petrol’s fueling and terminal projects.

System Integration and Digital Communication

The probes operate via RS-485 (Modbus RTU) communication protocol, enabling seamless integration with:

  • Automatic Tank Gauging (ATG) systems

  • PLC and SCADA platforms

  • Remote monitoring and reporting systems

General Petrol designs and implements these integrations on a project basis, delivering the field hardware, automation architecture and data communication layers as a single, coordinated solution.

Long Service Life and Minimal Maintenance

Thanks to the non-contact and stable measurement principle, magnetostrictive probes:

  • Do not require periodic recalibration under normal operating conditions

  • Contain no wear-prone mechanical components

  • Offer a typical mechanical service life exceeding 10 years

This significantly reduces maintenance requirements and total cost of ownership over the lifetime of the installation.

A Core Component of Modern Tank Management

Magnetostrictive level probes supplied by General Petrol in cooperation with FIMTEK form the backbone of modern tank management systems, supporting:

  • Accurate inventory control

  • Leak and loss detection

  • Automated reporting

  • Remote monitoring and alarm functions

This partnership provides customers with:

  • The assurance of local manufacturing

  • Rapid technical support

  • Project-specific engineering solutions

  • Long-term service continuity

General Petrol & FIMTEK magnetostrictive level probes represent a high-precision, safe and reliable measurement solution for critical storage and fueling infrastructure.
